A LETTER TO MY SISTER ON HER BIRTHDAY

My darling Yunis,

it’s me again.

The last time I wrote you a letter 5 years ago; you were in your final year at the university and I had it delivered via email. A lot has changed in the last 5 years, but we are still best friends! I promised I would write you one 5 years later: this blog post is me keeping my promise.

I really wanted to tell you I do love you more than I did 5 years ago, it’s not because you always cook for me, paid for this domain space, and read everything I write, although its kind of hard not to fall in love with that level of devotion + your small chops can make anyone think they’ve found their best friend you see it’s more than that.

It’s your heart that’s filled with the love of the purest kind. It’s your self-sacrificing ways. Your ability to make me feel like premium velvet chin-chin when you show up for me is amazing; even if it means you go along with my crazy ideas.

We’ve shared a lot of laughs, shed a few tears, and collaborated on our dreams together. Your tenacity, love, and jokes have gotten me through some of the tough seasons of my life. Every turn of my life, I can reach for you and find you right there. This letter is my thank you for being you unapologetically!

I’ll tell you all the reasons why I love you later. This blog post is to reaffirm my love and commitment to you, the way you’re committed to me living my best life every day. This is the year that we’ve prayed, prophesied, and talked about. It’s the year to thrive! So I wanted to remind you I’ll be in your corner: holding your hand, hyping you up in the audience, or babysitting Coco, I’m here!

I know you give off boss lady vibes any day, any time wearing your heels; I wanted to remind you to take your shoes off sometimes but never your crown and live a little. Yes, you raised me right; just like you promised mummy, now it’s time to live for you.

You’ll probably roll your eyes behind your glasses while reading this post and say, ”what’s with all this mushiness? Jessica is always extra – it’s just a birthday” No, it’s not! It’s a celebration of the awesomeness that you are – the kaleidoscope of your dreams; the symphony of your passions and pursuits. The woman who doesn’t care to be behind the scene, proudly proclaims ”the most important thing is family” and proceeds to prove it.

Thank you for choosing me. Yes, choosing not just to be my biological sister: but my hype woman, gist partner, motivation, and everything else I need you to be without me asking. Try not to shed a few tears at work today…you know you don’t like people knowing you’re a softie with all the surprises coming your way. You have a reputation to uphold!
Here’s to another year of thriving in your lane and learning to dance to a new rhythm.

All my love,
Jess

Ps. Check your email; the other part just arrived.

PPS. This will not deter me from asking for a raise in my allowance. I resume my case after today. Happy Birthday, sis!
